For most secret societies out there they are not actually "secret" societies but rather societies with secrets.  They are elitist and compartmentalized, with selective recruitment.

There are three main points of interest to potential recruits:

1. You will get in on the Society's secret beliefs and practices
2. If you're recruited then you have something that the society needs or      wants; how can your partnership be good for both you and the society?
3. You will receive the promise of special knowledge, status, or power

So this seems exciting, right?  Well don't get yourself in trouble.  Also, most hidden things in the world are eventually exposed so behave in secret in a way that you won't be destroyed if your society is infiltrated and exposed.
