 I saw an interesting essay on Putin - if you're thinking Cold War
 military strategy, the current borders provide a wide path for tanks to
 roll into Russia. Turning the map 90 degrees makes it clearer.
 Occupying the border states narrows the gap.

 If he's still thinking "Tank War Europa", it does sort of make sense.
