We've all heard of it happening to someone, but what when it happens to you? 
Being in a part of societies underground (and being found out) can give
leverage to an adversary against you.  Are you happy with a family, house,
car and status... what if all that could be lost in a day due to some offense
that happened in the past?  The KGB was very successful at implimenting
blackmail against people and the countries that they represent.  There was
once a story about a man who was blackmailed and it was threatened that he
help the KGB or risk those sexually explicit pictures being sent to his kin. 
Well they didn't anticipate his response... he laughed and said the good 'ol
boys back home would have a good chuckle over that.  You see culture can play
a significant role in what things work in blackmail and what things do not
work.  In this case it was not only acceptable to have a sexual fling but
also an entertaining side-note.

The best way to avoid blackmail? Don't commit crime, do anything illegal, or
a thing that could be embarassing.  If you've literally got nothing to hide
the opposition can't use your innocence against you.
