What's the truth here, anyone know? I think the answer really is "it depends" There are a variety of technologies used in these large drives. HGST drives, for example, just more platters closer together, and they fill them with helium to reduce friction. Others use "shingled" storage. These are good for shoving a crapload of data onto a drive, but not something you'd want to run as a daily driver probably.
