When the stuff hits the fan you will need a few things to survive:
water,food, and shelter.  In this article I will be examining water filters. 
I'd recommend a two-pack of water filters, the first one using a ceramic
filter that can be placed right into water and suck the water into the filter
like a straw.  The second method (that requires batteries which the straw
does not) is a method of irraidiating the germs ripping the bacteria,
viruses, and protozoa into pieces using UV (ultra-violet) light.

The LIFESTRAW costs about $20 USD and lasts for several years of regular use

The STERIPEN costs about $80 USD and lasts a long time.

Both can be found in hunting/fishing shops around the world.  Both of these
products are priced well and have qualty production in their creation. 
Every person should have at least one LIFESTRAW incase disaster comes upon
them.  By being powered by a simple sucking they don't have any mechanical
parts to break or lights to burn out.  I highly recommend these two products.
As for the STERIPEN you can get various versions of it depending whether you
want it to look highly attractive with an aluminum body rather than plastic,
or having different types of batteries supported.  Check it out, you won't be
disappointed.
