My wife (also English with a non-expiring Green Card) kept that Green Card until she decided to become a US Citizen.  

Until the second Bush administration there were some distinct tax advantages for her status.  

The changes in tax rules ("what is a taxable person" changed) disappated those advantages, and she wanted to be certain she could maintain USA residency to be near our children if I were to predecease her, so she did her citizenship.  

Like many converts and overly enthused, she trained to be an Election Worker to "get involved!"
