Surface Web ---> Deep Web ---> Dark Web

The Surface Web is the Internet that can be found from a meta-search engine such as Google.com or Startpage.com or DuckDuckGo.com...

The Deep Web is the Internet that is behind logins and passwords, not revealed to anyone who doesn't have the right credentials.

The Dark Web/Net is a parallel Internet experience that keeps your activities anonymous and secret.  It uses proxies and bouncing around various places in the world to obfuscate where you are connecting to the net from.

The currency used on the Darknet is Bitcoin, and Monero is slowly gaining adoption.  These are called crytpo-currencies.

What can you do on the Darknet?  You can visit redacted Journalist's blogs.  You can buy drugs, guns, passports, and very very dark (Evil) things.  Some people on the darknet would be better off in jail for life as they hurt children.  There are some places that you can't leave from.  What I mean by this is that there are some things that you can never forget or un-see.  Its much safer just to never go to certain sites on the darknet that look really shady. Furthermore, if your web browser caches images from the darknet you could be in legal trouble.  Even if you didn't go to the site in question, but only used one of the site indexes, if they have an illegal picture to advertise the site and that picture stays in your cache you can be in big trouble.  You would need to securely delete your web cache or use a system like TAILS.  See https://tails.boum.org.
