Subj : The TELEPORTER To : All From : warmfuzzy Date : Sat May 16 2020 00:36:48 Hi everyone, I'm setting up a system that I call TELEPORTER. I have given it that name because it "teleports" a user from one system to the next. Here's how it works: First a person uses a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) line to call in to my modem at my house, the connection is established, then the dial-up BBS user is shown a list of an arbitrary list of BBSes, the user then selects which BBS they want to connect to, and are TELNET-OUT'd to that board. So from one POTS line from the user, to the one POTS line of my modem, to whereever is listed as an option to connect to TELNET/SSH/RLOGON of whatever BBS. 1....2....3.... done! How does this idea sound? I've purchased two USR 56k v92 vEverything External Serial Modems to get this to work. I'll only be using a single line for dial-in, but I bought two of these things so that I can personally test out the quality of the connection between two good local modems. As you might be thinking : "Who on earth has a serial port now-a-days" ... thats a good point. I was able to find a USB to RS232 (9-pin) plug with a controller chip built right inside of the adaptor head. It is by UGREEN and sets up a COM port or ttySx port in a very slick fashion. It set me back around $14 USD. The modems cost me around $50 a piece from eBay (including shipping). I've purchased a POTS line from my local phone company which sets me back around $30 CAD/month, thats $20 USD. Currently the only BBSes that are supported for TELEPORTING out to are PHATstar affiliated systems. I don't intend on changing that. I want to make this really family friendly. Back to the technical side, I'll be connecting the modem to the TELNET servers via a program called SEXPOTS by the Synchronet developer. Its a fairly simple process, its just getting the glue to stick the parts together thats the issue. Oh, and a 1-800 style number has been purchased, so people can dial-in for free from anywhere in Canada to the USA. Time limits will be several hours, and a thing that I really love is the last four digits end in PHAT (as in PHATstar) I will be giving out more information including connection details once the system has been well tested. I'm not into the whole Windows '95 / VISTA type thing: this is going to be solid before going public --- Mystic BBS v1.12 A45 2020/02/18 (Linux/64) * Origin: Sp00knet Master Hub [PHATstar] (700:100/0) .
