Subj : Outmoded Secure Comms Speak Freely To : All From : warmfuzzy Date : Tue Apr 11 2023 23:01:27 It is sometimes good to look back at how things used to be in the beginning of the world, 'er I mean, in the 90's. Speak Freely is a software-defined VOIP system. It was one of the first of these to offer encrypted voice communications at a time when 56k modem communications was still a thing. No one uses it any more due to far better projects coming to the fore in recent years, but it is good to look at from a historical perspective and understand our roots. This software worked, it wasn't fancy, but it did in fact work. To check out its information, use your browser and crawl over to speakfreely.org. There are two versions available, SpeakFreely which uses encryption, and SpookFreely which has no encryption. I look at this and then i look at Matrix/Element and I think "WOW!" have we ever come so far. We are at a turning point in our civilization when the only way to overhear our secrets is using the old method of eavesdropping, that is standing right beside a person's house under their eaves drops and secretly overhear one's conversations. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed our trip down memory lane. Just imagine what kind of secure comms we will have in twenty years from now. What will the world be like? I am eager to find out. Freedom is not free though. If you want to continue having the ability to talk without interception and really keep your conversations private please donate to the EFF (The Electronic Frontier Foundation) www.eff.org.
