What is the old meaning of "liberal?"

It should refer to "setting something free." Like when the allied forces liberated Germany during WWII (by deposing Hitler.) That's liberation.

But today, people think it's "liberal" to waste billions of dollars in foreign countries, or to force people to adopt new gender pronouns.

And I must admit that I've adopted the term "liberal" to refer to people who support Democrats, but it's a mistake. I should refer to them as "idiots."
