Since I don't commute anymore, I don't listen to many audio books/podcasts anymore.  However, a great way to build up your personal library is to head to your local dead tree library with a CD-ROM equipped laptop (or, a USB CD-ROM drive).  Grab a stack of interesting audio books and start ripping to MP3.

If you're worried about appearances, you can certainly just check them out and rip them at home, but at like three minutes per disc, you can build up a healthy backlog of stuff to listen to very easily.
