Most likely, through mutation, a more contagious, less virulent strain
elbowed out the others. At one point, delta and omicron strains were in the
wild, but more people caught omicron, which increased the spread, and so
on.

Thankfully, that's the way of things. I got what felt like Omicron in
2022- a high fever, slight shortness of breath, headache and sore throat
instead of resiratory distress. I was mostly OK after a few days.
Friends of mine who'd gotten earlier strains weren't so lucky.
