Insanity from absinthe was caused by bog-standard alcoholism, plus, some absinthes were adulterated with chemicals which were basically poison, usually to achieve a certain color or suchlike.

As an absinthe fan since the early 2000s when I'd have the European ones shipped in by courier to bypass customs, what I can say about modern absinthe is that it is a very high proof drink that tastes of anise and herbs, is delicious, and does nothing unless you drink to excess, which you can do with any spirit.

The drive to ban absinthe in the past was hysteria, the same sort that led to alcohol prohibition generally.  And as with most hysteria, there's often - not always - a valid point somewhere in all of the hype.
