I don't have a lot to add to "vices" as what each of you have written are very well said.

Vices are salt and peppered within society to encourage us to turn our eyes of God.  And one vice always seems to be a "gateway" to another.  No matter the vice: drugs, alcohol, sex, theft, etc.

Sometimes people need to be hit by a train, but live, before they hear God telling them they are on the wrong path.  God taught me that lesson with smoking.

I quit smoking and drinking last year as I was tapped on the shoulder by a much higher power to remind me that I was losing health, friends, and to remind me I am weak compared to God.  It was life, or death, I chose life.

However in the 8 months I took of to worth through the cold turkey approach my now over 1 year "smoke and beer free," I think two other excellent reasons to stay clear minded and focused would be inflation and civil unrest which is becoming more of a threat by the day in many many cities around the world.  Being intoxicated with distractions will make survival in situations such as civil unrest more complicated.
