PHATstar is a computer tech society that helps those needy for computer kit and skills. We make people's lives better by giving out free hardware and software to people who can use that kind of kit. We specialize in textmode computing, such as the BBS Scene. It is basically a charity without charitable status. As its a society and not a charity we can do what we want to do without being forced to be politically correct, but rather can help out society as we see fit. It is a loosely knit organization of computer professionals and tech savvy folks. The name breaks down to "Progressive Hackers And Technologists." Its site is at www.phatstar.net. About half of what we do is secret while the other half is public. We do what we do for the glory of God and not for our own personal warmfuzzies. I would tell you what we are up to except that in the Christian faith the Holy Bible states that if we do our works in front of men then we have already received our reward by getting acknowledgment by man rather than God. We are seeking acknowledgment by God and not Man so we don't discuss our activities outside of the Society. We don't want to loose our reward so our stuff is kept from the public eye. In general simple terms we hook people up with stuff that can improve their lives. One major project that we are currently working on is the Textmode Magazine, "Echomail Networks" book, which can be found at www.textmodemag.com. PHATstar is the Society that is behind the Sp00knet Echomail Network that you're on right now, reading this message. Our website is located at www.phatstar.net. Leadership comes into play in getting our servers fresh and in proper working order in a way that's artistic and appreciated. I try to organize things that people want to be a part of and letting them join up on those projects that interest them. This includes organizing different projects and including people in what they are interested in, not just signing people up for every project. We do what we want to do and we have fun doing it. I've tried using ntask.com's organizational software to coordinate our projects in a managerial effort, but it never really got off the ground. We will instead be organizing our activities on GUILD BBS, which will be our Society's own WHQ BBS. This system will be our command and control BBS Server. This will be inclusive in getting our Society coordinated by our own members and not just me typing out things that need doing. When you let people contribute to the overall functioning in a horizontal fashion rather than a vertical top-down structure people feel included and that they are being heard and contribute their own ideas. This seems to work well. A managerial setup is like a traditional business, a leadership setup is like an organic body where each member contributes what they excel in, and where they aren't forced to work on projects that they just aren't feeling up to doing. To me, leadership is doing what you want to do in an organized fashion, and management is working as a general laborer on general projects. One is your love in doing things, the other is your obligation in doing things. Have fun in your leadership adventures: they make life exciting and worth the experience of participating in. w00t!
