This is sometimes referred to as "pocket litter," those things that leave traces of your origins and destinations.  These exhausts are accidental traces that you leave behind while performing normal tasks that give the opposition a hint as to what you're up to.  Let's say you carry an exotic type of cigarettes that are only found in France and you're carrying it in to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under the pretense of coming from America with no stamp on your passport from France and no background of being French or French-related in your profile.  This would be one tiny clue that the story one has doesn't match up.  Its things like this that can blow your cover.  One fun book that mentions pocket litter is "The International Spy Museum's Spying Handbook."  Its a small book with tones of good information for beginners and collectors of books.

What suggestions do you folks have to help improve operational security in terms of litter and traces left behind?
