Various agencies around the world invested Û ÛÛ Û thousands of man years in searchi ng for the "perfect ink" for writing Û ÛÛ Û  invisible messages that can be brought to light by exposure to light  Û ÛÛ Û or anohter liquid. Early in World War I, the British SecretÛ ÛÛ Û Intelli gence Service was eager to obtain "ink that came from aÛ ÛÛ Û natural source of supply." The director, Comm ander MansfieldÛ ÛÛ Û Cumming, made inqu iries of scientists at London University. HeÛ Û Û Û reported to subordinates that "the best invisible ink is sem en,Û ÛÛ Û which does not react to the ma in detection methods." Tests wereÛ ÛÛ Û conducted, and in fact semen did not react to iodine vapors. But Û ÛÛ Û the semen had to be fresh. As an  SIS officer wrote, "we thought we Û ÛÛ Û  had solved the great problem. But our man in Copenhagen evidently  Û ÛÛ Û stocked it in a bottle--for his l etters stank to high heaven, and we Û ÛÛ Û  had to tell him that a fresh operation was necessary for each Û ÛÛ Û letter."
