I remember FOX making a big deal about broadcasting that... when was it?  1995 according to Wikipedia.  It was even hosted by Jonathan Frakes.  ha!

According to the Article, FOX knew it was fake but didn't say anything fearing it would lower ratings.  Looks like the maker admited publically in 2006 that it was fake.
