I read those two books in college; my father was an avid reader; he
commuted by train to work and would go through 2-3 books a week on his
commute.

It's time for a re-read.

I think I'll add "The Mote in the God's Eye" and "Ringworld" to the
list. Maybe "Gateway" by Frederic Pohl.
