The point where the portal becomes a "thing" is where they really moved
into fiction/fantasy territory.  What I liked about the early story was
that it was, for the most part, based on evolution of current technology.
To me, that gave it more realism than movies and shows that introduce a
bunch of aliens and tech that violates physics.

I liked the story I have seen after that point, too, as it was still mostly
based on the evolution of current technology.
