Networking was fun back then, and also a bit easier, less demand for inherently insecure setups and protocols, so it was easier to lock things down tight than it is today. I also ran IPv6 on the side from around 2000 via various tunnels. Compiling a 2.x seties Linux kernel with IPv6 support wasn't for the faint hearted! :D ....
