Yes, they were exciting times, and when I worked in IT, it was very interesting. It was a time when you could build a lot of systems, and had to do so, if you wanted a service without paying what the big end of town paid. I put a business on the Internet with a number of Linux boxes, forming an Internet connected network complete with proper DMZ, screening firewall and a NAT router. A web server lived in the DMZ, and one or two other public facing systems. Today, all that stuff is done by cheap boxes from China (most of us have at least one between us and the Internet ;) ). ....
