Consumer modems can only transmit at 33.6k/48k, the ISP modems had to have the (expensive) DSP analogue domain noise/echo cancellation wizardry to be able to send you 56kbps. I think that 48k figure is in magical unobtanium conditions too, the attainable figure is by all accounts 33.6k. I think Cathode Ray Dude did a video about it, having modems call each other through an ATA. As long as you have a lossless codec, it should work just fine as you've experienced! ....
