The Synchronet author would be a great choice. He sounds like a  
fun and entertaining fellow (proficient programmer, drummer,  
family man).  You should have no trouble tracking him down.  
You've already introduced his terminal software, SynchTerm.

Me too.  Decades earlier, I did operate a few BBSes, and co- 
sysoped a PCBoard system on the side.  Now, I approach this hobby  
from a user's perspective and messaging (echomail).

That's quite a package for PART 2.  WRT echomail, don't forget to  
mention:

 [1] offline (QWK),
 [2] nntp methods (JAMnntp, SAMPInntp), and
 [3] point software (OpenXP, WinPoint), and even
 [4] software that can be used on a smartphone or tablet.

them is nolonger supported and has bugs.

Those are all quite relevant for the "user".

New on the horizon is leveraging the opensource and secure  
Telegram services (https://telegram.org) for accessing FTN  
echomail. A sysop residing in Crimea has RECENTLY produced (and  
is perfecting weekly) a mail processor so that FTN echomail can  
be channelled to and from the Telegram environment. Users only  
need to install the app, register with the service, and they are  
ready to read and write in select Fidonet echos.

Hop on over to the fidonet echo FIDONET.TELEGRAM to join the  
conversation and some experimentation.
