Subj : Retrogame for Sep: Turrican To : All From : deepthaw Date : Mon Sep 04 2017 09:59:01 Figured I'd try a new thing where I pick a classic game series and try to spur some discussion each month... Our Retro game for September is: Turrican! Originally released for Commodore 64, Turrican was best known for the Amiga port it received with an outstanding accompanying soundtrack. It mixed the run-and-gun style of Contra (or Gryzor, or Probotector) with the exploration and morph ball of Metroid. Action was fast and it was well known for pushing the Commodore 64 and Amiga to the limits of what they could do. Turrican was ported to a vast number of platforms, although many consider the Amiga version to be the definite article. Being a signature game for the Amiga meant Turrican was much better known in Europe than the United States. It was followed up by Turrican 2, and Turrican 3 was developed as Mega Turrican for the Genesis/Megadrive simultaneous to the Amiga. There was also two SNES games (Super Turrican and Super Turrican 2.) Will Turrican ever make a comeback? Fan remakes of the Turrican engine can be found without too much difficulty so there's definitely demand! Being an American gamer, I only recently had the opportunity to dig into Turrican via Amiga emulators and playing the console ports on my RetroPie. Ironically, the first though I had upon booting it up was "Holy crap, did Duke Nukem 1 & 2 ever rip this game off..." It still plays well, though I still need to figure out how to map some of the keyboard functions to my gamepad. --- Mystic BBS v1.12 A34 (Windows/32) * Origin: Deep Space '94 * telnet://deepspace94.com * fnord (80:774/43) .
