If you have steam on your computer, and you own an xbox controller or a
playstation controller, you can either buy or download a collection that has
the game you want or just download a rom. After that, put the add that
program to steam, and then you can configure your controller to work with it.
Then you and your son can play those games. Easiest way (in my opinion) is
just buy an NES or a Genesis, although that may be expensive or finiky.
