You get what you pay for...maybe it's not a matter of what's "better" but
what works for you. I have a cheap guitar I got for $50 from Craigslist.
It's a Fernandes strat in red and it's really nice. I have a $350 strat I
picked up at a pawn shop and never play it these days. I have another $50
pawn shop special that I put really light strings on and play that from time
to time. 

Best thing to do is go to a guitar shop and spend a few hours trying
different types and styles and neck lengths on different wood on the fret
board and play with the knobs and dials, see if it holds its tuning etc.
