I'm not sure it would have to be the same software, would it?  Seems like
someone would be able to share a WAV file of one track and someone could import
it into a project, record a track, then send send a WAV (or several WAVs, one
for each track) back, etc..  I haven't done a virtual band though.  I've
occasionally messed around with Mixcraft (on Windows) to record music, and I
think it can import and export WAV files for the tracks (or MIDI files, if some
of the tracks are virtual instruments).  I suppose for the virtual instrument
MIDI files, it would help to use the same software..  though I'm sure it could
render those tracks to audio and export a WAV file.
