I bought the Pi 4 (4GB) shortly after it was released, so some time mid to
late 2019?

It's also running off of a "PiDrive" which is just a 250GB spinning drive with
a USB 3 interface:

Originally you still needed an SD card inserted which the Pi would boot to
and then "hand off" operation to the HD.  Now the Pi can boot directly via
USB so there's no SD card inserted.
