Yeah, that does sound like a mess.  I know in Fidonet that long filenames are 
strongly discouraged.  I've had a filebone in Fido for about 19 years now 
(CH-WARE) and I couldn't tell you how many times there's been issues with long 
filenames.

You did spur me to codify how to hatch files here in Micronet to avoid those 
issues and I thank you for that. :)

The "8.3 filenames" toggle in MBSE was put in to avoid that mess.  Much like 
the "Force BinkP/1.0" was put in because of buggy BinkP implementations like in 
Internet Rex.
