A microkernel is a kernel that is the heart of an operating system but it has the bare essentials and all other functionality is outside of the kernel meaning that you can have a small, fast setup if you with to configure it since Linux loads its drivers into RAM, unlike Windows which embeds its drivers into the kernel itself. This also allows one to have a very precisely configured system with no additional bloat that can be used on many different computers unlike Windows.
