I think home computing has always been that way.  I have paid exactly 
once for a Windows upgrade and that was a mistake.  I have very rarely 
paid for software unless it was something I not only liked but needed 
pretty badly.  There's always been free options for commercial software; 
you just have to know what your limitations are.
