I think FreeNAS nowadays works mostly on autopilot. You are not supposed to touch its guts unless you want to. It is all wizard
and GUI manageable if you don't want to learn FreeBSD but you still want native ZFS with a solid network stack.

But I get that wizards and GUIs are less fun than having a truly slim setup you are familiar with :-P
