I run Slackware nearly everywhere I am not running a server.
I care for release schedules, package support, and the finantial sustainability of the whole operation.
 
I don't care for fancy political statements like those of other distributions, having the last version of everything, and having rapid-fire releases. There are other distributions for that. However, if you can't see why communication problems have been hurting the distribution as a tool in these two decades I can't really help you there.
