The insects don't bother me too much.  As for tghe weather, that's the first thing I check.  That's why I like going in the fall: less severe weather (at least up here).  I don't normally camp near water unless it's along one of the many lakes that the TVA created.  The campgrounds ar usually a lot higher than the water.
