Subj : building PC's To : JIMMY ANDERSON From : Rob Mccart Date : Tue May 13 2025 01:38:00 RM> But it's all a sort of joke RM> now when you think back to horrendously expensive systems running RM> Windows 95 or 98 and paying $400 for a floppy drive or up around RM> $1500 for a 10 *MEG* hard drive. JA>I know! And a 386 with TWO FDD's so you could copy stuff? WOW! LOL I'd been into computers for quite a while by the time 386's came out. I started off building Apple II+ Clones, and later switched over to 8088 PC systems.. RM> But these days, every time I update my main computer, it gets RM> smaller and smaller, and costs less each time. JA>Or, if you get Apple, it stays the same price, but gets better >each generation. :-) Maybe I don't pay as close attention to their computers but their Phones seem to get more expensive all the time.. B) RM> I've gone to eliminating a separate Desktop computer and getting RM> all the adapters so I can run a big monitor, keyboard and mouse RM> off of my Laptop, and then everything is on it if I want to travel, RM> I just unplug the extras and it turns back into a Laptop. JA>Had a Dell laptop at a previous job. Had the docking station for it >so it was a 'true' desktop at work, but laptop on the go. I don't do >that now, because of limited bench space, and the fact that I use >the laptop more 'on the go' than at the bench... :-) I rarely travel far enough to take a computer with me, given all you can do on a Phone these days, so it's almost tempting to have a 'proper' Desktop system but a couple of years ago when my old Desktop was getting a bit too old to do a lot of stuff, I started using a Switch to use 2 computers on the desk switching between them. Now that Desktop system is so old I haven't started it up in a couple of years I think, so my Laptop is using all the hardware from the old Tower and it became obvious how handy that could be. Plus my newest Laptop is only about 13 inches so it's a lot nicer to be able to run it using a big monitor and keyboard, yet it's still not too bad for travel use on its own if needed.. JA>I'm setting up a Linux workstation for the bench, though, and >will have a full keybaord & monitor there. :-) I've run 'light' versions of Linux a few times over the years but never quite talked myself into taking the time to learn it properly or fight to keep the hardware I have working well on it.
