Surgical masks aren't designed to keep viruses and bacteria out; they're meant to make sure solids don't get splashed in. I used to clean patient rooms at my local VA hospital. If people knew about how dirty hospitals really are, they'd never go in there. That's why I chuckle at the masks...you're more likely to get infected from things on your skin than direct inhalation...even so, you'd need to stand 20+ feet from everyone if you really were worried about it.[1] It's funny, for being someone who should have died after contracting SARS-CoV-2, I feel just fine...and I've only had it once.
