Depends.  If there's s lot of lightning involved, yes.  I lost $3000 worth of 
amateur radio equipment to a lightning strike six miles from my house; the 
lightning strike traveled down electrical wires and fried the finals in my 
radios.

Since I don't have any UPS equipment, it's better to be safe than sorry.
