Front wheel drive with decent tires can get you most places. It's the places 
it can't that cause problems.   :)

As long as you remember that all of the weight is on the front tires and the 
back can go whichever way it wants, you can do OK - and that going is easier 
than stopping.  :)

(that last point is the lesson that SUV drivers will invariably miss, much 
to the chagrin of the people in front of them)

I spent lots of time up in the mountains in California. We'd go to the ski 
resorts parking lots after closing and practice getting out of skids. I hope 
it helped, although I usually try to stay off the roads when it's really 
bad.
