I suspect the wind opened the gate up. It is a heavy metal one and the locks
and the posts it is attatched too have not been in a good shape for half a
decade.

The posts are a bit leaned to the sides and the gates are no longer closing
well. They scratch the door if you open them wide enough. Right now I am using
a lot of rope to keep it together but it will need some repairs by spring.
