The "problem" cleared up.  After a revisit to FB next day the  
Messenger panel responded (populated) although it still too a  
lot longer than I would expect. Yet, the entry field (where I  
would start typing a message) has an incredible lag when typing  
or when moving the cursor.

I think I can abandon FB and not miss anything. I haven't  
spoken to my relatives in person for decades anyway. I don't  
think they know that a smartphone can make actual voice calls.
