It was different when pay phones were everywhere (and I wasn't as concerned 
about using a shared public pay phone)

One fun pager trick we'd have was to go to a bar with friends and page our 
missing friend with the number of the bar. He'd call the number, they'd say 
the name of the bar, and you'd know where to go to meet them.

When I started out consulting, I found a desk phone with a built in 
answering machine that would page out the caller ID of anyone who'd called. 
It was very handy in a pre-cell phone world.
