For starters, they don't get carrot everyday.

The birthday carrot also includes a trip to their favourite pasture. I also
force myself to spend more time with them... if I have work to do I try to
re-schedule for other day. I usually take a portable table and some sharpening
tools to the place they are gracing around and sharpen some knives or
something.

Horses never seem to be paying attention to you while they are grazing, but
they actually appreciate the company. You can tell they are in a better mood.
