This reminds me of a story.  Back when I was running my original board up in 
Bracebridge it was on a Pentium 166 with Front Door & Telegard.

Back then when I would get a netmail message, Front Door would chime every so 
often to let you know you had netmail.  The sound came through the speaker 
attached to the motherboard.

I went away for a weekend (camping I think) and someone sent me a netmail 
message.  When I got home I noticed that the computer had been switched off, 
which of course means the BBS was down.

After asking around my Mom said:  "Oh, yeah, your computer had the hiccups 
and I was tired of listening to it, so I just switched it off."

After that, I disconnected the PC speaker.
