I liked the fact that the person on the other end of the communication had 
to be involved. Now people feel like they can email at any hour of the day 
and the "support clock" starts ticking as soon as they hit send.

With a pager, I'd call them back, explain the situation and set expectations 
before things started.

That relied on pay phones being everywhere - and me being young enough not 
to be freaked out by the hygenic aspects of pay phones.   :)

I'd thought about going to a feature phone to see what it's like, revisit 
speaking to people instead of texting/emailing, but the killer app for me is 
maps. I'd need to go back to a Thomas' Guide, those spiral-bound map books I 
used to keep in the car.
