I've never looked back.  The only reason we still have a "landline" is for 
our alarm system.  I use voip.ms and pay $0.85 /mo for the phone number and 
$0.009 per minute no matter if it's inbound or outbound.

They charge in US$ and I think I load $15 every 3 or 4 months depending on 
usage and whether I'm playing around with a toll free phone number or a 
number from another country.

I have the cable modem and the ATA plugged into battery backup so if the 
power goes out the alarm system can still dial out.  I don't use it for 
anything else, I just make & receive the few calls I do use on my cell.
