I am not talking about purchase price.  I am talking about the amount in taxes one pays monthly.  Canada's telecommunications system is taxed at about a third less than the US.

Only the rental car tax and the gas tax is higher in the US.  There's over 300 different tax types applied to telecommunications in the US!

How things got that way is out of scope for this venue but a good web search can help.  It's really complicated and convulted, much like the US Tax Code.
