I *do* have Spotify on my phone, a Blackberry Q10. It plays well.  
But the problem would be to [1] send the audio to the home stereo  
system, and [2] operate for more than 5 hours at a time before  
needing to change the battery.  I can't keep the phone on AC/ 
charger because the USB port is broken.

A tablet could work better (being plugged into AC all the time),  
but I don't have a tablet, and I don't really want to yet acquire  
more tech.

I have a fine T40 Thinkpad that would work perfectly - it would  
sit nicely next to the main system without too much trouble  
(compared to a large noisy desktop), and I just have to replace  
the fan so that it can boot up properly.

I am really looking forward to try that home-server solution. You  
can even control the output of the stream to another device. I  
could then hopefully control the play from my phone and only need  
to stay connected to the internet long enough to select my  
playlist, and then disable internet and enjoy the tunes stored  
"offline" on the T40.
