In my mind, "messaging" is short for "Instant Messaging", where you have realtime conversations, at least in theory. Actually, a lot of people leaves idle IRC clients so answers to questions can pop up with an hour of delay or more, but the IRC/XMPP format is tailored for realtime while something like NNTP or BBS is tailored for async conversations.
