I second Nick's suggestion about using PDZmodem.  Had it working great with 
ProBoard for quite some time.

However, in the same breath, I had a long phone conversation with Chuck 
Forsberg just before he passed on (I was a registered DSZ user and we'd talk 
ham radio; I used to live about 15 miles north of him) and he told me ZModem 
was not designed for use over the Internet.  He recommended YModem-G 
specifically.

My BBS' ZModem implementation works nicely, however, with DOS over telnet, 
there might be timing issues as you've stated.  Perhaps doublecheck your 
calling line to PDZ?

To be honest, it's been so long since I've worked with that setup that besides 
this message, I'm probably not much more useful...
